Healdsburg Junior High School - Grading Periods

Healdsburg Junior High School

Grading Periods

There are two semesters per school year.  In each semester there are three grading periods. Grading periods are about 6 weeks in length. Grades are sent home at the end of each grading period. Semester grades earn the credits needed for promotion. Semester grades are the average of the three grading periods in the semester.

Credits

Students have the opportunity to earn 100 required course credits over the two years at HJH. Ninety-five are required for promotion. Each semester grade (D- or better) earns five credits. Some elective courses can earn credits.

Understanding Grades & Credits

• 1 year = 2 semesters
• Grades are earned each semester
• Semester grades = average of the 3 grading periods
• You need a semester grade of D- or better to earn 5 credits
• 1 semester class = 5 credits • 5 semester classes = 25 credits (most elective credits don't count)
• 1 year or 2 semesters = 50 credits
• 2 years = 100 possible credits (you need 95 to graduate)

How to Calculate Your GPA (Grade Point Average)
A = 4 points
B = 3 points
C = 2 points
D = 1 point
F = 0 points

Add up your points for each grade and divide by the number of grades.

Example:

English A    4 points
Science     B 3 points
P.E. B 3 points
History C 2 points
Math B 3 points
Elective D 2 points

Total points 17

Number of grades ÷ 6
